The New Lamborghini SUV Concept To Arrive at Beijing Auto Show

by cars

These pictures, published in the appropriately-titled Italian magazine Quattroruote, claim to reveal the new Lamborghini SUV concept. Aventador styling on a tall Audi platform? Maybe. One thing’s for certain, this ain’t no rough-and-ready LM002.

The skinny in the translated article is that Lambo is bringing this as-yet-unnamed concept to the Beijing Motor Show in April, teasing a possible production model that’ll drop in one or two years’ time.

There appears to be much speculation about the powertrain, with few or no real facts. Speculation runs to the Aventador’s V12, the Gallardo’s V10 or even a new, more-efficient, Audi-based V8 or even [insert Italian for gasp] gasoline/electric hybrid that’ll make the kiddie hauler all the rage amongst well-heeled hypocrites.

Lamborghini was actually the first dedicated maker of supercars to dip its toe into muddy waters. Released in 1986, the Lamborghini LM002 was much less about ferrying spoiled brats to soccer practice and more about arab sheikhs tearing up dunes out by the oil fields. It was powered by the same V12 used by the Countach and required its drivers to shift gears themselves using a [insert Arabic for gasp] clutch pedal and five-speed. This soft-roader won’t ask so much of its drivers, instead shifting for them through some form of automatic transmission, possibly Audi’s new 8-speed. You know, because more technological complication people don’t understand and less involvement are what the 21st century supercar customer wants. Think of this as the “Blando Lambo.”

2013-2014 Audi RS6 Avant Prototype Spied Upon in Sweden (Images)

by cars

Like its BMW M5 compatriot, the RS6 Avant was one of those cars that allowed you to have a mid-life crisis without upsetting the family as it offered supercar-crushing levels of performance in a surprisingly practical estate package.

In its previous iteration, it sported a 5.0-litre bi-turbocharged V10 capable of delivering a maximum output of 580HP and peak torque of 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft).

The introduction of the new generation A6 Avant last year meant that there was a good chance we’d see the rebirth of the RS6. And true enough, our spy shooters captured a prototype model conducting winter tests in Sweden.

But what makes us believe that this is indeed an RS6 Avant prototype? For starters, Audi has already presented all versions of the A6 Avant including the V8-powered S6. Then there’s the flared wheel arches that are a signature trait of the RS series. In addition, the test car also featured a modified front bumper and massive brake discs.

The production version will no doubt sport more changes such as a comprehensive aero kit, different alloy wheels, and an RS front grille.

Most sources claim that the new RS6 in both Avant and sedan forms will use a tweaked version of the VW Group’s newly launched 4.0-liter TSI that powers Audi’s S6 and S7 (420HP) as well as the S8 (520HP) and the Bentley Continental models (500HP), possibly boosted close to 600-horses.

However, we wouldn’t dismiss the possibility of the German firm using a V10 engine. Whatever the engine choice, power will be transferred to all-four wheels via Audi’s quattro system.

Other upgrades will include a more powerful braking system with the option of carbon-ceramic disks making their appearance again, as well as a specially modified suspension.

We should see the RS6 Avant making its debut by late 2013

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco Now on Sale with Pricing (Prices)

by cars

The wait is over for customers eager to get into the redesigned-for-2013 Malibu, but there’s a catch. The Malibu is just now hitting U.S. dealerships, but the first model offered for sale is the Eco version, which uses the gas/electric powertrain GM calls eAssist.

The mild hybrid system is a re-engineered version of the hybrid powertrain in the old Malibu and now-defunct Saturn Aura sedan and Vue compact SUV. It was a flop for GM due to elevated prices and disappointing fuel-economy figures.

The new system debuted in Buick’s LaCrosse for 2012 and combines a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a lithium-ion battery-powered electric motor for 182 total horsepower. Its regenerative braking system and engine start/stop functionality also help save fuel, but the Eco cannot run solely on battery power. GM estimates the Malibu Eco will get 25/37 mpg city/highway.

The Malibu Eco starts at $25,235, excluding a $760 destination fee. The 2013 Eco model will be joined by two new engines later in the year: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

The 2013 Malibu is GM’s first global midsize sedan; it plans to sell it in nearly 100 countries. The Malibu recently went on sale in South Korea and will soon be on dealer lots in China.

And This Winter’s Worst Driver Is…

by cars

With a few months of winter still yet to come I can definitely say that no one is going to top this horrible driver in a Kia. Nice try Utah drivers. Good effort Seattle commuters. You simply can’t top a woman driving at highway speeds in the median while trying to signal into oncoming traffic.

The only information the guys who shot this video provide is that it’s along I-81 and it apparently occurred this weekend. Given current snowfall rates it’s probably Pennsylvania or New York. Also, it’s indistinguishable from a suicide attempt.

UPDATE: Local news reports suggest that the woman was having a diabetic response and wasn’t aware of what was happening. Scary.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette: First Photos

by cars

Two months ago we brought your exclusive first renderings of the 2014 Chevy Corvette. Those images, in ZR1 trim, were based off our first-hand look at the new sports car. As you’d expect, they ignited a firestorm across the automotive world, with many believing what we showed you were fake. Hell, even GM — an automaker who claims they never comment on future product — issued a weak-ass denial of the authenticity of the images.

But now this morning, thanks to our friends at KGP Photography, we have these first spy photos of a pre-production version of the new Corvette.

You never should have doubted us.

These images show the 2014 Corvette — the seventh generation C7 Corvette — testing in the real world as a production-spec IVER prototype.

And as you can see, everything seems to match up quite nicely to our exclusive renderings. For starters take a good look at that rear end — four pipes in a trapezoidal exhaust opening.

Check out the hint of Camaro-esque taillights. Yup, that’s totally the distinctive look we revealed in the middle of November.

Next, look at the roofline. Does it look familiar? It should — it’s the exact same one we showed you back in November.

Or the front end with that big open-mouthed grille? Yes, that’s precisely the look you saw in our renderings.

The A pillar? Totally what we showed you. The kick at the bottom right corner of the door? It’s there too.

Take a look through both sets of shots and compare for yourself. I think you’ll see why we were so excited to bring you those renderings back in November.

Those who were in our corner — thank you. Those that weren’t? Don’t worry about it — we know it won’t happen again.

Study Detects Dangerous Driving Distraction: Women

by cars

Distracted driving is very much in the news, and so far, cellphones were fingered as the culprits. Now, there is a study that finally identifies the biggest distraction: Passengers. A study by State Farm, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health goes to the bottom of what experts have known for long: Peer passengers increase driver crash risk, especially amongst adolescent drivers.

The study analyzed a nationally-representative sample of 677 teen drivers involved in serious crashes. Says study author Allison Curry, PhD, director of epidemiology at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention.:

“Both male and female teen drivers with peer passengers were more likely to be distracted just before a crash as compared to teens who crashed while driving alone. Among the teens who said they were distracted by something inside the vehicle before they crashed, 71 percent of males and 47 percent of females said they were distracted directly by the actions of their passengers.”

The researchers found males with passengers were almost six times more likely to perform an illegal maneuver and more than twice as likely to drive aggressively just before a crash, as compared to males driving alone. Females rarely drove aggressively prior to a crash, regardless of whether they had passengers in the car.

Nissan 350Z Coupe Crashes Into 350Z Roadster on the Highway

by cars

Here’s a video that will have you trying out YouTube’s loop feature to find out what exactly happened to cause this crash between two fellow Nissan drivers, which looks like it took place either in the States (more likely) or in Canada.

The dashboard footage from the Infiniti G35 that was following from behind shows the Nissan 350Z roadster on the left lane and the allegedly supercharged 350Z coupe on the right side driving at what appear to be normal speeds.

Then when hear something that sounds like an engine revving and all of a sudden the coupe Z pulls to the left and smashes into the silver roadster with both cars falling into the grass median.

Fortunately, according to the YouTube poster’s description, no one was hurt during this incident.

[From YouTube Description]
“Check out that still shot (!) Wet roads + supercharger = thank god the wires did what they are supposed to do. Everyone walked away, minus the silver 350z. It actually went through the wires (under 2, over 1). -They were not street racing-. I was behind them in my g35 for miles in a group, we were all cruising @ the speed limit (70mph). The vortech supercharged black Z tapped the gas and broke loose the brand new tire.”

2013-2014 Mini Beachcomber Crossover SUV Concept (Images)

by cars

Think there are a lot of Mini variants already? Hold on to your hats, because BMW is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. Next month the new Mini Roadster will hit American showrooms, and next year, a two-door crossover (presaged by the Paceman concept from Detroit last year but carrying the Countryman Coupe in production form) should be available as well. But that’s only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

With the third-generation Mini Cooper hatchback set to arrive in 2014, the Anglo-German automaker will soon begin the whole process anew. And when all’s said and done by the end of the decade, the Mini range will have – according to reports – grown by another three bodystyles for a total of 10.

The current lineup includes six bodystyles: the standard Cooper hatchback, the Mini Convertible, the Coupe, the Roadster, the Clubman wagon and the Countryman crossover. Throw the Countryman Coupe into the mix and you’ve got seven. What Mini will come up with next for three additional versions remains to be seen – we wouldn’t be surprised to see a minivan, a slant-back crossover or maybe a convertible crossover (like the Beachcomber concept pictured above) – but if anyone can milk the bodystyle cow for all it’s worth, we’re confident its initials are B-M-W.

2012 Audi R8 V10 Stretch Limousine [Images & Video]

by cars

From the creators of the Ferrari 360 stretch limo comes yet another controversial supercar conversion, this time based on the Audi R8 V10.
Carbonyte UK will work in conjunction with Limo Broker to create the world’s first super-stretched R8 and which it says is destined to become the signature model for the Limo Broker brand that also owns the Ferrari 360 Modena limousine.

The British company said that work on the Audi R8 V10-based model has already commenced with the launch expected to take place by the end of summer 2012.

In the meantime, Limo Broker’s released the design renderings and a virtual video that outlines the concept behind the limo, while also providing an impression of how the finished vehicle will look like.

The limousine will be able to seat up to eight people and will retain the production sports car’s 5.2-liter V10 engine with 528bhp.

BMW Preparing M6 Gran Coupe to Rival Mercedes CLS

by cars

With the new 6-Series Gran Coupe being a rival for Mercedes CLS, it is only natural for BMW to make an M version of the car , and take on the CLS63 AMG with it.

They are indeed doing so, as the first prototypes of an M6 Gran Coupe have already been spotted out in the wild. Although it’s like two years away from its market launch, but already the big CLS is getting worried.

The M6 Gran Coupe will be getting BMW’s new 4.4 liter bi-turbo V8 with 552bhp and 501lb ft of torque. The CLS63 has a 5.5 liter bi-turbo V8 but it makes 518bhp and 516lb ft. Both cars hit 60mph from nought in about 4.5 seconds, and both have a limited top speed of 155mph.

But the fact is the M6 Gran Coupe is basically a sportier version of the M5, and that’s, to all intents and purposes, the best sports saloon in the world. It will look very good too, what with the M paraphernalia added to the Gran Coupe’s natural beauty. Granted, the CLS63 will sound better than this, because AMG’s always do, but that wouldn’t be enough to drive the customers away, would it.

The M6 GranCoupe will be unveiled closer to 2013. It must wait for the two-door M6, which will be revealed later this year, to get its feet grounded.
