BMW Owners Finally Admit Nazi Past & Using 50,000 Slave Laborers

by cars

The Quandt family, major shareholder of BMW, and one of the richest in Germany, is finally and belatedly confessing to its Nazi-past. Patriarch Günther Quandt was an early member of the Nazi party, he joined 1933, after Hitler’s election. During the Third Reich, Quandt company empire was kept running by more than 50,000 slave laborers. Many businesses that were taken away from Jewish owners ended up in the hands of Quandt. He even had odd family ties with the Nazi elite. His second wife Magda, which he had married when she was half his age, divorced him eight years later, only to marry propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, with Adolf Hitler as a witness. While other German carmakers, first and foremost Volkswagen, came to terms with their past, the owners of BMW denied it until recently. When the German Forced Labor Compensation Program was established, the family declined to make a contribution, claiming they had no reason to do so.

In 2007, a documentary aired on German TV and linked the family to the Nazis. The film revealed not only the slave laborers, but also that Günther Quandt had convinced Nazi contacts to send a Belgian competitor to a concentration camp after he refused to sell his company to Quandt. The documentary created only a minor scandal in Germany, because Quandt’s Nazi past had been known. A family spokesman said the allegations were “not incisively new.” However, the Quandts had up to then steadfastly denied all allegations.

The documentary prompted the Quandt family to do what other German companies had done many decades ago: Employ a historian to examine the family’s history during the Third Reich.

A Bonn historian received access to the family archives and concluded in his 1,200 page report that “the Quandts were linked inseparably with the crimes of the Nazis. The family patriarch was part of the regime.”

Hundreds of slave laborers died or were executed. At the end of the war, Günther Quandt’s former wife Magda killed her six children in the Führerbunker, then committed suicide with her husband Goebbels.

2012 Citroen C4 Aircross Revealed

by cars

Sooner than expected, Citroen released official pictures and details of the new C4 Crossover, called the Aircross.

The new French crossover goes on sale in the first half of 2012, available in two and four-wheel-drive versions. The car has a nice Citroeny design which they say helps with the aerodynamics as it provides better air flow. Taking inspirations from the DS series and the Hypnos concept car, the C4 Aircross is one of the best looking compact SUVs with its unique grille, LED lights, and 18-inch wheels.

AWD versions of the car come with a clever system that allows drivers to manually select one of the three transmission modes to meet their needs and their wishes: 2WD for optimal fuel consumption, 4WD, which automatically distributes the torque between the front and rear axles, or lock mode, which increases the torque transmitted to the rear wheels for more grip under severe conditions.

As for the powertrains, the C4 is set to become a segment leader in terms of CO2 emissions, so it comes with the HDi 110 engine, mated to a 6-speed manual, HDi 150 engine (also available with 2WD and 4WD with a 6-speed manual gearbox) and a 115 bhp 1.6i petrol engine(available in a 2WD version with a 5-speed manual gearbox). The 150 bhp 2.0i petrol engine will be available on markets outside Europe, in 2WD and 4WD versions, coupled to a 5-speedmanual gearbox or continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Check out the 2012 Peugeot 4008 Compact SUV Crossover

by cars

Brought to you by the PSA brotherhood, with a bit of help from Mitsubishi, here’s Peugeot’s version of the Citroen Aircross, called the 4008.

The 4008 is apparently for those who don’t like the look of the Aircross. That said, the 4008 is not exactly conservative. It has Peugeot’s feline touches all over it. Next to its Japanese and Korean rival, it actually looks great.

Some of its cool features include glass panoramic roof, Open & Go system, 18″ alloy wheels, a touch screen navigation system, and reversing camera.

Like its brother, this compact SUV comes with a four-wheel-drive system with three transmission modes: “2WD” two-wheel drive, “4WD” four-wheel drive and “LOCK” locking of the four-wheel drive. In the two four-wheel drive modes – 4WD and LOCK – the distribution of the torque between the front and the rear is managed electronically.

You can have the car with four engines, two petrols and two diesels:

  • Petrol
    • 1.6l 85 kW (116hp) / 152 Nm – 5-speed manual
    • 2.0l 113 kW (150hp) / 198 Nm – 5-speed manual or CVT
  • HDi Diesel
    • 1.6l HDi FAP 82 kW (112hp) / 270 – 280 Nm with overboost – 6-speed manual
    • 1.8l HDi FAP 110 kW (150hp) / 300 Nm – 6-speed manual

The 4008 will go on sale initially in international markets from 2012 second quarter.

Cadillac Escalade woops Mercedes C-Class in 0-60 (Video)

by cars

Just for funsies Cadillac pit the big Escalade against the lean and fit Mercedes C-Class Sport in a drag race. The Caddy wins, obviously, because it’s Cadillac’s own test. And you can’t really trust it, because of course they are biased. But the little side joke is actually brilliant. After the race the Escalade tows the Mercedes back! Caddy Escalade really is a capable car, and it’s very cool. Gotta Love it.

VW Working on e-Up! To Compete With Chevy Beat EV in 2013

by trill

The cherry of the eye for Chevy – the Beat EV, now will have to face tough competition from the German czar as VW prepares its contender – the e-Up! Envisioned on the Up! platform, the e-Up! concept is a glimpse into the future EV projects of VW.
Volkswagen E-Up! This project came into limelight at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show where VW showcased the first e-Up! concept. Since then a lot of changes have been made to the design and technology. Finally, at 2011 Frankfurt motorshow, VW presented a near production version of the e-Up! all set to go in production in 2013.

To make the e-Up! look futuristic and to separate it from the pack, VW has given it an arc-shaped layout of the LED daytime. Rest of all the design details remain pretty much same as the standard Up! The e-Up! is powered by an electric motor electric motor which generates peak horse power of 80 hp and has a high torque of 210Nm.

The e-Up! has a maximum speed of 135 kms/hr. The battery capacity is 18kWh which enables the e-Up! to travel a maximum distance of about 150km. Because the batteries are located in the underbody of the Up!, this frees up a lot of boot space. The e-Up! has a competent potential to become your city runabout.

However, Chevy’s little competitor – Beat EV if definitely not an injured horse. First of all, Beat EV is no more a ‘concept’ and can go into production even tomorrow. Sure it produces less power (about 60 bhp) and has a 20 km shorter range than the e-Up! but the Beat is a proven platform and a successful product from Chevrolet.

At the end, only time will tell which is a more competent EV of the two.

VW’s CEO Sizes Up Competition – Hyundai’s Better Interior (Video)

by cars

The world got treated to some old-school car business back at the Frankfurt show when VW CEO Martin Winterkorn inspected the competition at the Hyundai stand. He was not pleased.
Life got a lot more difficult for Winterkorn’s underlings when their boss started to adjust the steering wheel of the i30 on display. “There’s no rattle!” In some fairly colloquial German, Winterkorn put his whole staff on notice. He calls first one man by name, Klaus Bischoff, head of Volkswagen Brand Design and gives his blunt analysis. Glancing around he asks, “How’d he pull it off?” Bischoff is in some disbelief, and one of the VW suits around quickly comes to explain, sounding fairly rattled himself. There was a solution, he says, but it was too expensive. Witnerkorn wasn’t having any of it. “Why can he do it? BMW doesn’t know how, we don’t know how. Rattling!”

Winterkorn beckoned for more underlings, immediately summoning a tape measure to check the sight lines around the Hyundai’s a-pillars. When the employee next to him is having some trouble, Winterkorn, the head of what may soon be the biggest car company in the world, takes the tape measure himself, does his measurements, and gruffly compliments the Hyundai’s interior. The nervous VW people around him could only offer excuses, trying to keep their boss happy, but Winterkorn remained stoic as ever. He stepped out of the car, looking deep in thought and his entourage quickly filed in, looking all the more agitated themselves after the episode.

Aside from how incredibly German it is that Winterkorn takes charge with a nearby tape measure, this is just one of those great looks into the hard as nails upper strata of the auto industry. I now imagine that meetings at the VW boardroom look suspiciously like the scenes where Darth Vader chokes that guy in the Death Star. What really wouldn’t surprise us is if Hyundai themselves were the ones who shot and uploaded this video, just don’t expect them to admit it.

English Jumps Over 3 MINIS for 2012 London Olympics (Video)

by cars

England long jump champion and London 2012 Olympic Games hopeful, J.J. Jegede succeeded in his attempt to jump over three Minis in an event that took place at Potter’s Field, London, to promote BMW’s sponsorship of next year’s Olympic games. If you think it was an easy task because the three Minis abreast measure a little less than six meters, while in ideal conditions, a top-level athlete can manage a seven- to eight-meter jump, consider that a car’s rooftop is not as forgiving as a sandbox…

Of course, these weren’t just any Minis, but theLondon 2012 Edition models of which only 2012 will be made in celebration of the Olympic Games that will be hosted in the British capital next year.

Apart from the roof graphics with the London 2012 Olympics logo, which also adorns the side scuttles, this special edition also sports a dashboard etched with London’s skyline silhouetting some of its most famous landmarks like the Tower Bridge and the Battersea Power station.

What The 2014 Toyota Supra Concept Might Look Like (Images)

by cars

Check out the pictures and photos of these artist renderings of what the 2014 Toyota Supra might look like.

In the years that followed after the suspension of production of the last Toyota Supra, the MkIV in 2002, we were (and still are) blasted with numerous reports and rumors suggesting that the Japanese carmaker is planning a revival of its flagship sports car.

More recently, Car Magazine cited unnamed official sources as saying that Toyota has alreadyapproved a successor to the Supra. Of course, until we hear it from Toyota, we’re obliged to take everything we read about a future Supra with a grain of salt.

Nevertheless, we always welcome design proposals for future cars from talented artists like Andreas Fougner who attempted to reinterpret the Toyota Supra for the 21st century.

Fougner’s design builds on the basic lines of Toyota’s upcoming FT-86 rear-wheel drive sports coupe creating a slightly more muscular and distinct shape.

Maserati Kubang Promo Commercial Video

by cars

Maserati has rolled out a new video to drum up anticipation for the company’s new SUV concept, the Kubang. The flick begins with images of the Italian automaker’s illustrious racing past, complete with open-wheel fire-breathers sliding across cobblestone courses and a fleet of MC-12 racers blowing past exuberant fans. That’s all well before the portly, computer-generated Kubang saunters onto the screen. We’ll be clear here; we understand that occasionally, automakers need to bow to the tides of popular demand so that they can keep cranking out the vehicles we love the most. It works for Porsche. We get it, but this seems to be a bridge too far.

Maybe it’s the fact that the Kubang has a name that sounds like it was lifted from the classic El Kabong cartoon series. Maybe it’s the sight of the reaching Maserati grille supersized and splayed over the front of an SUV. Whatever it is, we’re having a hard time getting behind the machine, but we sincerely hope that a drive of it changes our mind – it did with Porsche’s Cayenne. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself.

2012 Chevrolet Volt vs. Chevrolet Cruze Eco Car Review

by cars

Ed, Sajeev, and yours truly have all weighed in on the Chevrolet Volt. We all agreed that it drives surprisingly well, but that aspects of the interior need work. I hadn’t been planning to review the Volt again, but was asked if I’d like to have one for a week following the Cruze ECO. And so an intramural competition was born. If the $19,995 Cruze ECO is such a solid, comfortable, and efficient commuter, why spend twice as much for the $39,995 Volt?

Okay, maybe not twice as much. A $7,500 tax credit takes care of over a third of the difference. And a run through TrueDelta’s car price comparison tool finds that the Volt includes about $2,300 in additional features. Give credit for these, and the difference is about $10,300. So figure fifty percent more.

A word about those earlier reviews. All three were based on short drives, about an hour in my case. More than a few people have wondered how valid such a review can be. Well, valid enough that even after a week in the car I find I have little to say that hasn’t been said before, save that the strengths noted earlier remain strengths and the weaknesses noted earlier remain weaknesses—neither significantly diminishes with experience.

The number one weakness: as Ed noted, “an iPod covered in buttons is no iPod at all.” Even after a week in the car the center stack remained difficult to use. At a minimum the many buttons need to be separated into clearly demarcated logical groups. As is, even basic functions often require far too much conscious thought and time with one’s eyes off the road. I never did figure out how to best operate the HVAC, as the AC and heating systems seemed to have minds of their own even in “comfort” mode. I’d also like a way to turn off the audio without turning off everything. As is, you either have to turn the volume all the way down or use the mute button on the steering wheel. Go the latter route, and the music returns at the original volume the next time the car is started—the “mute” is forgotten when the car is shut off.

Among other weaknesses, the Volt’s rear seat didn’t seem any less cramped after a week with the car than it did initially. And you’ll want the $695 rear camera option given the car’s poor rearward visibility.

Objectively, the Volt’s number one strength is, of course, its ability to run on electricity. Some will claim that the roughly forty-mile range before the gas-powered “range extender” automatically kicks on isn’t sufficient. Well, in my case I had to take the car off life support in order to test it with the engine running. Until I did so all of my runs to Costco, the doctor (daughter broke a toe), and the kids’ school were accomplished entirely on battery power.

How much cheaper is it to run on electricity? I complained earlier that the Volt’s display doesn’t include a report for miles-per-kWh analogous to the trip computer’s miles-per-gallon report while running on gas. I’ll repeat that complaint. Consequently, I had to do a little math, the upshot of which is that the Volt covers about four miles on each kilowatt-hour (when not running the air conditioning). Conservatively figure three miles per kWh to allow for charging losses and some AC use. In Michigan each kWh costs about 12 cents, so this works out to about four cents per mile. In the Cruze ECO I observed a bit over 35 MPG. With gas at $3.80, that’s about 11 cents per mile. Over the course of a 12,000-mile year, the difference would add up to about $800. In other words, it’ll be a while before that $10,000+ is recouped.

But does this render the Volt pointless? Perhaps there’s more to the car than cutting fuel costs? Any car beyond a basic transportation appliance is bought because it’s more pleasurable to look at, sit in, or drive. Perhaps all three.

The production Volt doesn’t look like the initial concept (which I personally never expected to happen, given GM’s propensity to create thoroughly impractical concepts). But it also doesn’t look like the Cruze or anything else, with the partial exception of the Prius. And it does have a more stylish, upscale exterior than the Prius. Just looking at it I felt like I was driving something special, and not just because of the $995 “veridian joule” paint and $595 polished aluminum wheels that helped bump the pre-tax credit total to $46,165 (someone inside GM did their best to induce sticker shock in reviewers). This was far from the case with the Cruze.

Sit in the Volt, and the sense of occasion goes up by an order of magnitude. Love it—or not—the interior styling is certainly distinctive and effectively expresses the leading-edge technology packed into the car. When pressed, the start button lights up blue while the car makes a video game-like “powering up” sound. Hit it again, and you get a “powering down” sound as the light goes out. (My boys loved this.) The problem we had figuring out whether or not the Prius was on: avoided. The two displays are gorgeous and far better designed than the buttons that assist them. The driving efficiency gauge, a ball the changes height and color, is the most intuitive I’ve yet experienced—though I wish it reported how much of the braking was being handled through the regenerative system. There’s also a driving efficiency report to surreptitiously test one’s “I’m not going to change the way I drive” spouse. (She scored a respectable 86 percent and reported liking the car far more than the relatively sluggish Prius.)

Drive the Volt, and you’ll find that, in this case at least, appearances aren’t deceiving. GM has tuned the powertrain to deliver an incredibly smooth launch. Even if you floor the accelerator from a dead stop in “sport” mode there’s not a hint of a jerk. You cannot chirp a tire in this car. Instead, the car smoothly and almost silently builds speed much the way a high-speed elevator does (if not in the same direction). As with the Prius, driving the Volt with an ultra-light foot feels natural. But, unlike with the Prius, driving it with a heavy foot also feels right. Once the car is underway the electric motor dishes out a firmer shove when prodded. Either way, the Volt never feels sluggish or strained the way a Prius (or Cruze ECO, for that matter) can. With the accelerator to the floor the car easily leaves traffic behind—if you’re in a hurry, sixty can happen in about nine seconds. Not a stellar time, but recall that this is with absolutely no sign of strain from the powertrain. While running on battery power the electric motor is nearly silent. I rode in an EV1 once, and the whine of its motor was far louder. Run out of battery and the Volt’s 1.4-liter gas engine automatically cuts on, but usually remains a distant hum while roughly matching the MPG of the Cruze (high 20s to mid 40s, depending on driving style and conditions, with a suburban average around 35), and so 10-12 MPG short of a Prius. At its loudest the gas engine remains far quieter than the 1.8 recently sampled in the new Chevrolet Sonic. If GM can achieve such silent running in the Volt, why not in the Sonic? Braking is also smooth and silent in the Volt, with no evident transition between the regenerative system and the conventional brakes. The entire experience of driving the car is distinctively effortless, almost magical.

This isn’t to say that the Volt is a cocoon. The suspension is firmer and more tightly damped than that in the Cruze ECO and there doesn’t seem to be as much road noise insulation. As a result, impacts are more sharply felt and heard, but body motions are also better controlled. The ride remains comfortable, and serious drivers will appreciate the chassis’s moderate level of feedback, which helps compensate for the incommunicative (if well-weighted) steering.

The bottom line: I wasn’t sad to see the Cruze ECO go at the end of the week—it’s a very well done appliance, but an appliance nonetheless—while I very much miss driving the Volt. In twenty years the way the Volt drives will likely seem typical, but we’re not nearly there yet. In the here and now the Volt’s worth $10,000+ more than the Cruze the same way other $30,000+ cars are worth more than the Cruze: by providing a different, more desirable experience.
